The beach (testing character)

Post by Zarina on Sat Sep 14, 2013 8:49 am

The sleek hull of a sailboat softly cuts across the glassy water of Long Island sound, it's white paint flawless and smooth, the images of roses decorating the entire side, large, amazing murals. The name 'Sea Rose' marked the vessel, and the girl aboard had decorated every part of the boat, until she loved it. It was a mere twenty foot long craft, with a strong retractable keel and a billowing sail as it surfed along the waves towards the camp for demigods of all types, excluding the Romans.

Thorne, a child of the daughter of the harvest, Demeter, sat lazily on the wooden deck, the wood freshly stained and shined by the salty sea air of the Atlantic. Her red hair flowed behind her, a darker red than most redheads, but she liked it all the same, especially how it could flow when she was sailing. When at rest the locks of scarlet hair came down to her mid back, nice, long ,and flowing, just as she liked it. She didn't like, however how people insisted it was dyed when it really wasn't.

Her green eyes sparkled as she carefully examined her rose, well, one of the many roses she grew, and one of the many plants she cared for across the eastern sea board. She had been sailing for three days now, starting down from her home in Virginia beach, and coming all the way into New York, Long Island to be exact for camp. She had been going to camp for three years now, and loved it, ever since she was thirteen she had gone very summer to camp and made friends, as well as marvelous memories that she would cherish. Finally, her voyage was drawing to a close and she would be at camp, chatting with her cabin mates and enjoying the wonderful strawberry fields.

Sighing happily, she saw the familiar coastline of the sound, and pulled the rudder ever so slightly to the right to correct her angle, not wanting to scratch her own boat on one of the dangerous rocks in the shoals outside the island. She stood, checking her nails to make sure they were still the earthen green she adored and had painted on them last night. She absolutely hated being teased, and didn't want to give the snotty Aphrodite girls any more excuses to tease her then what they already had.

Thorne got twenty feet away from shore when she dropped the heavy anchor into the water, creating a splash, ripples moving away from the source, fish as well swimming away to the various nooks and crannies that they hid inside of. She knew she couldn't just leave her boat right off the coast, and once she had moved her stuff into her bunk she was planning on taking the sailboat to the local marina, North of the camp. She tossed the simple inflatable raft into the cool New England water, quickly dropping her bags into the lime green raft, before jumping into the water with a joyous shout.

The Barbados girl was wearing a white and light greened two piece bathing suit, not quite as showing as a normal bikini. Although Thorne liked an occasionally flirt, she was still conservative on her clothing and did not like to show much of herself, unless she was with her cabin mates or alone with the plants in the field. Now coated in the cool water, she took the rope connected to the raft into her hand and slowly swam to shore, pulling it behind her until she got to shore and pulled it out of the water.

Kneeling besides her bag, she opened it and began to withdraw some casual clothing, an orange camp shirt and perhaps some shorts to go along with it.

Despite the old quarrel between Demeter and Poseidon, Jana Kay had learned to overstep her aquaphobia and to love the water. Today, she had decided to go to the beach with Lucy, her best friend, and the two had went there right after a lesson of pegasi-riding.

After splashing water at each other and a session of underwater tickling, Lucy had left the water, panting, to enjoy the sun on her towel.
Jana Kay was about to follow her, dressed in her wet green bikini, when movement caught her eye.

"Hey, look," she told Lucy, "there's a boat over there!"

It looked like a normal sailing boat - was it a mortal on there? Could it be?
Normally, no mortal could enter the Camp's borders - except they were granted permission. So either it was a demigod, a mythological being, or... a monster.
However, a monster wouldn't just come on its fancy sailing boat to attack Camp, besides, it couldn't pass the magic borders either.

No, there was only one person Jana Kay knew who had such a boat. Her own half-sister Annabelle.

Thorne quickly pulled up some shorts over her bathing suit, throwing on the orange camp shirt with black lettering on top when she heard voices. She glanced around and finally located the source, her half sister Jana Kay, and one of her friends. Hastily, Thorne stood up, smiling and waving over at the two.

"Heyoz!" She said, smiling, her carribean accent poking through obviously. "Hia Ja-na!" She smiled, picking up one of her bags after zipping it shut and putting it on her back. Among all of her half siblings, Annabelle preferred Jana Kay, she didn't know why, but she just did.

She walked over to the two girls and nodded. She didn't really know what to say, or really anything and decided to let her sister reply first. She felt excited, yet appeared calm even though she ached to run around camp, one of the best places in the world for her, and one of the safest from the mythological dangers a demigod had to be ready to face on a daily basis. Perhaps this summer she would accomplish something great, something that Mr. D or Chiron would congratulate her for, although she knew it was a slim chance of that, she wasn't very well known. However, she wasn't a loner either....more average in social standings. Her red hair was still wet with salt water, and her smile seemed to brighten up her entire face as she smiled at the two.

As soon Jana saw it was indeed Annabelle, she ran over to her and hugged her. Annabelle smelled of salt and sea, and a bit of peaches - an oddly nice combination.

"I'm so happy to see you again!" she said in her Scottish accent. "How are you?"

She smiled greatly at her, her green eyes sparkling, while the wind absent-mindedly played with her wet blonde hair.
Lucy followed Jana and passed an arm around her shoulders, introducing herself. Lucy was the daughter of Gelos, and she and Jana Kay were just perfectly suited as best friends for each other - who would better match Jana, an optimist and ever-happy girl, than the daughter of the god of laughter himself?

Annabelle smiled and hugged her sister back briefly, enjoying the hug while it lasted. "I is fine-a Ja! Ha's bout you?" She replied, smiling. She preferred to speak in Greek at camp, or attempt normal English, though usually it would simply revert back to this, her Barbados dialect. She smiled at Lucy, heading her introduce herself and took a moment, slowly saying. "Nice...to....met...you" she stuttered a bit, her face showing a sign of struggle as she attempted to use 'American English'. She really didn't see the point in calling it English if so many variants were out there, but there wasn't anything she could do about it. Changing languages weren't exactly on her career choices.

She adored the way Jana spoke, and often envied her Scottish accent, being a descendant of Scotland blood as well. Although she was born in Barbados, so she couldn't exactly say she was a pure scot, and she had lived in Virginia for the last few years, so was she a pure carribean gal?. Things like this often confused the demigod, so she usually stayed away from such hard questions.

Knowing Annabelle preferred to speak Ancient Greek, Jana Kay took her arm.

"Do you wish to go to our cabin now?" she asked in that language. "Do you need any help with your bags?"

She glanced at Lucy with a smile.

"We can help you carry, we're strong girls," she continued and playfully contracted her forearms like she were showing off muscles - which she of course hadn't, being a fourteen-years-old girl.

Thorne laughed at her sister and nodded, glad to know Jana didn't mind the language switch. "Of course" she replied in the ancient language, handing her a bag. She always enjoyed being around Jana, they were such good friends as well as siblings.

After Annabelle handed both the girls Thorne picked up a strange circular container with a flat bottom, covered with a blanket. "Awk! Awk! Thorne we there?" A chirpy voice came from beneath the cloth.

Thorne laughed "Jana, I don't think you've met Misty" she grinned as she revealed her green parrot, a stripe of black along its wings.

"Di immortales!" Jana exclaimed as she beheld the parrot. "It looks beautifuuuul!"

She stroked it's feathered throat with the tip of her index.

"What's its name, Misty, right?" she asked, a great smile on her lips. "It looks absolutely wonderful."

Kay gratefully took one bag and passed it around one of her shoulders.

Thorne smiled at her sister, gently holding the cage to the bird she loved and cared for. She had aquired misty from her local shelter when she was volunteering there, and absolutely fell in love with the green parrot.

"Yes, her names misty" she smiled as she began to walk with the other two girls, heading towards the cabin. "Parrots are allowed, right?" She's asked nervously, not wanting to be separated from her pet.

Jana Kay nodded.

"I guess so," she said.

As they passed Lucy's and her towels, the two girls collected them and carried them along.

"So you've sailed all the way from Virginia till here?" Jana inquired.

Thorne nodded "yeah, Norfolk to Long Island" she smiled as she walked along the stone paths towards the cabin. "I almost drowned in a storm that passed by, hurricane or something. I went around it though, in between a wall of a watery death and the sea of monsters" she laughed.

Thorne didn't care much about her near death experiences, they were simply memories, something to laugh at. "I also painted a few pictures of dolphins, but I lost sight of them around Maryland"

"Aw, too bad," Jana said," I love your paintings. Remember the apple tree you painted me once? I still have it, you know!"

She smiled, taking Lucy's hand in a friendly gesture as they scaled up the last dune that led to Camp.

Thorne smiled "really? Thanks! The apple tree was a nice one, I painted that along the blue ridge mountains, an apple tree farm I think" she smiled, recollecting that day, even if it was two or so years ago.

"I may not have been able to hold onto my dolphin paintings, but I did get one of the hurricane, it was mostly from memory though, it's hard to paint in bad weather" she mused. She always enjoyed to share paintings with Jana, and she knew Jana also owned maybe a dozen of her works by now,. As they scaled the last dune Thorne smelled strawberries and sighed "same old camp"

She grinned as she started down the other side, into the valley "what have you been up to?"

"Loads of things," Jana replied with a smirk, though not telling her about James. That one was a conversation she had only had with Lucy and Ophelia. It wasn't that she didn't trust Annabelle, no, not at all. It was more something she wanted to ... keep to herself.

"We're mainly training, you know," she carried on. "The war... again."

Thorne nodded and made a peace sign "make plants, not war" she said and sighed. "Why can't everyone just agree and lay down the weapons? War only destroys, think of all the people, plants, and animals war has destroyed. It's simply diabolical!"

Thorne was particularly nonviolent, unless someone had damaged nature in some way, and then it wouldn't be very pretty at all. She wasn't the best with a weapon, but she was quite skilled in hand to hand combat.
